Whom would you waive?

In Gammons recent list of probable waivees, the only Indian is Burks. I can think of a few others whom I would dump for the waiver price, assuming the taker has to pay all the salary:
Ricky G
Lawton
Stevens
Rincon
Mulholland
I think the pitchers would certainly be claimed, at no great loss to us. The others might be if some contender loses a key player.

Ricky and Lawton? It depends. My question is this: Does it do a prospect harm to rush him into the majors too soon and let him learn on the job in the big show? The answer is probably also "it depends": on the individual prospect. Some would handle it, others would mentally crumple.

The waiver thing is fascinating. If we waive a player, and someone picks them up, are they picking up their contract also?

If that is the case, Burks is definitely keeping if no one wants him. Lawton is dicey. If Lawton can still steal a base when healthy, then I say keep him. If he cannot, then waive him. But I doubt anyone wants him because of his contract length and amount.

Yes, they pick up the players contract as is.

Lawton would be snapped up in a nono-second. His contract is not unreasonable and the Tribe would never let him go just so someone could take his contract. This will not happen. And there is a good reason for that; it would be stupid!

Would it? We still owe him around $20 mil over the next 3+ years. Escobar, Garcia, and a couple of others can fill that spot for near the minimum, and put up at least as good numbers.

Over the course of 2000 - 2001, Lawton hit about .300 with an OBP of .400 and a slugging average of .450. He also averaged about 20 SB's / year. I seriously doubt that Karim will ever put up numbers like that. Esocabar has the potential, but potential is all it is right now.

Numbers like Lawton's aren't that easily found.

.300 over 2 seasons is low? don't forget he's played with an injured shoulder much of this year.

Since he left the Twins, he batted .246 (.352 OBP) with the Mets, and .248 (.353) with the Tribe. I think those kind of numbers can be found for a lot less than $7 mil/year. Given that his numbers were virtually identical with the Mets and Tribe, I don't think this year's injury has affected his plate performance at all. Leaving the Twinkiedome may have had something to do with it.
